【故事概要】：
宇宙世紀CE年代，人類已能利用DNA工程製造出幾乎完美的新人類(Co-ordinator)。但新人類的優秀能力卻引起了不少自然人的嫉妒和厭惡，並受到地球聯合政府不公平的對待。結果新人類移居至多個宇宙衛星都市，組成了PLANET政權並建立了扎夫特軍。中立國奧布則主張新人類和自然人和平共處。
CE70，地球聯合軍突然以核彈攻擊PLANET的衛星都市，造成數以百萬計的平民死亡，史稱「血染情人節」。至此，地球聯合軍和扎夫特軍終於開始了全面的武裝衝突。面對著資源豐富的地球軍，扎夫特軍開發出「中子乾擾器」及機動戰士。
兩軍交戰十一個月後，地球軍與中立國奧布曙光社在殖民星赫利奧波利斯上秘密完成開發五架Gat X-Number (神盾、暴風、決鬥、閃電、強襲)高達與及新型戰艦-大天使號。可惜計劃遭扎夫特軍獲知，成功潛入奪取當中的四架高達。
