Jajah Extends Free Global Calling
Monday, January 01. 2007
On January 1st, Jajah proudly extends its Free Global Calling Zone - within and between free countries, a registered Jajah user can call another registered user for free.
New entries to the list of free countries include Chile, Panama, Colombia and Puerto Rico. With Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro and Belo Horizonte being added as major new cities. And last, but certainly not least, Zambia is now the first member of Free Global Calling in Africa. At the same time, Jajah is significantly lowering prices to some high traffic destinations like India, Mexico City, Turkey, Israel, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan and Russia and many more.
Welcome India
We are most excited about India. Our dream is to create a new type of global telephone company and we have been trying to bring low cost solutions to India since we started. Today we are able to announce that the 1.1 billion people of India can now connect to the US or UK for just under 7 eurocents a minute. We couldn't be happier, and this reduction comes with a Hindi version of the Jajah website. So: Welcome India to the Jajah Global Community!
In total, Jajah is reducing the price of staying in touch to over 1.6 billion people around the globe!
How Can we Do This?
Jajah is a young company, we started offering services only about 10 months ago. As we watch how the system is used, as more people join and use Jajah services, we learn more about how to keep the system healthy. We see ourselves as the caretakers of "The Peoples Phone Company". We run it like a global community. If the community uses the service responsibly - that is, if they sometimes make paid calls along with their mostly free calls, the system works. And the opposite is also true, if people never use paid services, it can damage the system. In general, the more people who join the network and the more calls that are made, the more we can offer free calls and the lower the average price can be.
Since all Jajah calls end up on a regular phone, they all cost something. With Jajah free calls, Jajah pays the phone companies for this "last mile" connection. The combination of country behaviors, changes in the rates, and changes in currency make our pricing dynamic, meaning it has to be adjusted from time to time. So while we are reducing the rates to over 200 destinations we are forced to raise prices in a small number of countries. To see if the price has changed in your area, go to our new rates table. Our prices in those countries that have gone up are still very low and very attractive and we are working tirelessly to improve rates whenever possible.
Happy New Years and all the best for 2007!

Free Calls On Christmas
Saturday, December 30. 2006
As you know, Jajah celebrated Christmas by giving much of the world the ability to call their friends and family for free. It was a huge success. People from all around the world used Jajah to make calls, send text messages and make family conference calls. It was Jajah's busiest day ever, with more calls made, more call minutes used and more new user registrations than any day in Jajah's history.
Jajah users made millions of calls on Christmas. If you figure a typical call last about 15 minutes, and a dollar a minute is not unusual for a long distance call, then Jajah saved it's users millions and millions of dollars on Christmas Day alone. As our dream comes true, and more and more people use Jajah everyday, it's clear we will save our community billions of dollars every year!
We received emails from all around the world thanking us for the free calls, but at the same time, it wasn't perfect. Some people reported difficulty completing calls - and we apologize to everyone who had difficulty. In some cases the problems appear to derive from our telephone partners , sometimes with the overall network and sometimes it was a Jajah problem. None of this is meant as and excuse, just an explanation and we take full responsibility. We are continuing our search for the causes so we can keep it from ever happening again.
The Jajah team wants to thank everyone for making December 2006, the most successful month in our history. Thank You for using the service and thanks for sticking with us as we work through our growing pains. If we helped one family stay in touch who might otherwise not have, the program was a success to us.

JAJAH Partners with Media Companies
Tuesday, December 19. 2006
We are pleased to announce that we are extending our vision of free global calling through partnerships with some of the largest media companies in Europe. Anyone living in Germany and Austria will now be able to make free phone calls to anyone in their respective countries. Collectively, the arrangement reaches about 100 million people.
The Partners
Pro7/Sat1 - Germany's largest television station reaching 80 million viewers.
Bild-T Online - Germany's largest Newspaper.
News-Austria - Austria's largest media company.
"We are seeing an interesting convergence here," said Mr. Mattes. "The most innovative off-line media companies are moving towards the web. By working with JAJAH, our partners are able to deliver advanced 2.0 solutions to their existing customers. JAJAH gives them a path to the future by supplying all the telephony infrastructure they need."
Each company is incorporating the Jajah application into its web sites, so making calls is as easy as always, with the main difference being only the caller needs to be registered to make the free call.
The arrangements represents a new business strategy for Jajah. By supporting the cost of the calls with advertising, we will be able to support our vision of free global calling even faster and further than before.
Now you can talk JAJAH also with our partners!

Wednesday, December 13. 2006
Yes, it's been a good year for JAJAH and the JAJAH community. We have exceeded all our expectations. More users have made more calls to and from more countries than we ever could have imagined when we launched just 10 months ago.
This is JAJAH's first Christmas and we are celebrating by giving back.
On Christmas Day, all JAJAH users will be able to make free phone calls, free conference calls, free scheduled calls, and even send free text messages to anyone in 80 countries and it doesn't even matter if the call recipient is registered at JAJAH or not.
This is our way of saying 'Thank you' to our customers, said co-founder Roman Scharf. Each holiday season, many people all over the globe are separated. Our message to them is 'call home on Christmas,' wherever 'home' happens to be. The call will be on us.
Have phone-to-phone calls with your friends and family at zero costs.
The JAJAH team wishes you the happiest of holidays.

JAJAH Kills Roaming
Friday, December 08. 2006
Expensive international roaming charges are history.
JAJAH's Voice 2.0 service allows you to activate cheap international calls from your mobile phone, even if you're outside your own country.
Anyone who has ever traveled, and made calls from their mobile phone, knows how expensive it is. The high costs come not only from the price of long distance but also from what the carriers call "roaming charges".
The introduction of JAJAH Mobile 60 days ago, virtually eliminated mobile long distance charges, and now we've solved the roaming problem.
Now with JAJAH Mobile, you are able to enter two numbers. The number you are calling and the number of a nearby local landline, like your hotel room, or a local mobile phone. Jajah then connects the two phones you've listed.
"JAJAH has eliminated one of the biggest barriers to mobile, global communication. Roaming charges are finally a nuisance of the past!"
says JAJAH co-founder Roman.
The connection between the two phones is established via an SMS/text message or a GPRS request. The only costs arise by sending the SMS request, which is only a fraction of the usual roaming charges and it works regardless of the phone company or telephone model. Another example of how JAJAH is eliminating the barriers to global communication.

Free Phone Calls - JAJAH on ABC TV
Friday, December 08. 2006
Ric Romero of ABC TV / Los Angeles describing our service.
"Well, and this is the latest technology that uses your computer to make phone calls, and the best part is it is cheaper and more userfriendly than ever before"
"Tracy Monsen met her boyfriend studying abroad. They're back at home now, but the problem - he's in Canada, she's in the States. 'Since I got back from Norway, my phone bill has been approximately $200 higher than it used to be." Monsen said
"... Tracy went to JAJAH.com and registered to make a call. She entered her number and the number she wanted to reach. Her phone rang once, she answered it and JAJAH connected her to her boyfriend in Canada ... with JAJAH calls between registered users are free in most of North America, Europe and Asia. For non-registered users, there are low fees. The service got a thumbs up."
"My preference between the two services right now is JAJAH"
Thanks Ric. Excellent video.

Jajah is innovating the phone call
Tuesday, December 05. 2006
It's unusual for us to put up the entire contents of a journalist blog, but Tom Foremski of Silicon Valley Watcher did such a good job of capturing the current JAJAH story that we didn't want to take anything out:
"Jajah is one of those rare startups that managed to put a tingle down my spine. It's best described as a telecommunications company creating new types of phone call services using Internet technologies.
Jajah is not a VOIP company, don't confuse it with Vonage, or Skype. Jajah uses VOIP but this is not about technology it's about spotting a very large business opportunity. And it's also about innovation in its proper sense.
Jajah has developed what it calls "web activated telephony" which is a mouthful compared with the simplicity of its service. You go to its web site, input your phone number, and the number you want to call, and click to connect--that's it. You use your own phone, there is no download, no headsets to use, it's dead simple. And for many users it is free.
I recently met with Roman Scharf, co-founder of Jajah. "We wanted to create a very simple to use telephony service and one that uses the current telephone system and telephones. Skype is popular but only 3 per cent of Internet users use it. You need to install the software, and you have to be at your PC, and use a headset."
Jajah takes advantage of free local calling by establishing local PBX sites in more than 100 countries and using its network to carry the voice traffic between them. The beauty of this approach is that it leverages the existing global telephone network, and more importantly, it has a massive potential market of existing phone owners--much larger than the number of Internet users.
But how defensible is this approach to competition? "There is a lot that we do on the backend that is not easy to do. Also, it would take at least a year to negotiate all the contracts with the telephone companies around the world." A year is a long time for a competitor to establish the back end infrastructure especially since Jajah is well into phase two--negotiating big partnership deals on the front end.
Mr Scharf says that telephone companies are concerned about Skype and Vonage but not about Jajah. "We work with the phone companies and we help them keep customers. In Germany, for example, there is huge churn in phone customers, the phone companies costs of acquiring customers, so that they can sell them all the other services, is huge. Partnering with Jajah allows them to keep hold of their customers."
Jajah is close to announcing some partnerships with large media companies that will expand its reach. It is also exploring business models that could eventually make all voice calls free, to anywhere.
But this is not all. Jajah will soon be unveiling some very inventive phone call products/services. I'm not able to talk abut them yet but I'm impressed with Jajah's creativity. I'm also amazed that nobody has thought to innovate on the basic telephone platform--which has barely changed in function in 125 years.
Jajah is name you will be seeing a lot because I'm certain that you'll be using its co-branded services in many places--online and offline."
Thanks Tom, Great Post!

Basically, just register a free account with Jajah and then add your friends phone number in your address book. Make the call and watch the miracle happens as your phone rings and you get connected to your friend. Talk for free with your hats off! Over the next few days to a week I'll be slowly incorporating this new tool to my team for conference calls."

A Pat on the Back
Friday, November 17. 2006
Emil Larsen of Personal Computer World (UK) reviewed JAJAH, and overall we came across most favourably. So we've decided to share his observations and throw around some of the stars JAJAH received in the ratings. Everyone likes stars, just ask any astronomer or people who hang out on Hollywood Boulevard.
Here's what Larsen says about JAJAH in his article:
As it stands, JaJah has some big advantages over more established VoIP services [...]. It allows you to use your own phone instead of an awkward [...] USB phone or headset and you don't have to install any software. Instead, all you have to do is head to the JaJah website to set up a call. Many calls are free, and those that aren't are a bargain.
and about JAJAH Mobile
Once computers are taken out of the equation, the mobile phone service has the potential to be a real hit.
In his verdict, JAJAH is
...a painless way to make free or very cheap calls and we look forward to the mobile version.
Nice one. Talk JAJAH everyone!

JAJAH Fierce 15 2006 Winner
Wednesday, November 08. 2006
We are slowly coming to the end of our first year of operation and we will celebrate our big ... ahem ... "Oh-One" with all kinds of incentives. It was an immensely successful first year, reflected by the recognition we got world-wide and the awards we received.
Here goes another one: JAJAH has been selected as one of the winners of this years prestigious Fierce 15 awards.
"This distinction honors JAJAH as one of the top 15 companies on the cutting-edge of the constantly evolving VoIP industry. Winners were selected from amongst hundreds of organizations, demonstrated themselves to be 'fierce' through their innovations in the marketplace"
The awards were announced last night at the wVoIP 2006 Executive Summit at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco.
"FierceVoIP congratulates JAJAH on being named as one of the Fierce 15. JAJAH is a leader in bringing the VoIP revolution to the masses by innovating with VoIP online and over the air."
said Dan Rosenbaum, editor of FierceVoIP.
Thanks to FierceVoIP for selecting JAJAH to be one of the Fierce 15 VoIP Companies of 2006.

Testimonial: Skype war gestern
Tuesday, November 07. 2006
This is to start a new category of short blog posts called "Testimonials", nice finds in the media and blogosphere from our users. René Fischer will open this category.
"Mein Fazit gleich vorweg: Skype ist tot! [...] Die Vorteile von Jajah liegen auf der Hand. Im Gegensatz zu Skype braucht man für Jajah keinen Breitbandzugang, der gerade wenn man unterwegs ist sowieso meist nicht zur Verfügung steht. Vor allem Reisende sparen so eine Menge Geld [...] Und nicht vergessen: Mit Jajah kann man zu allen registrierten Festnetznummern innerhalb Deutschlands kostenlos telefonieren."
